Day 14 – the MTB vibe

Good day Grace tribe! Our fearless warrior is kicking ass. Yesterday she completed 75 miles with 6700 K of climbing. Remember she has a little over 50 pounds of bike/gear and is a meek 105 pounds her self. Yesterday she tackled 3 passes, the last one was a blast for her and it had a lot of single track, this gave Grace the giggles as Mountain biking is her passion.

She did have a little incident with a dog bite, well it was more like a nip. Grace rolled up on an old mountain man driving an old beat up Dotson pick up truck with a Rottweiler mix dog following. The dog noticed her and did get a “nip” in, her booties shielded her from a more serious bite. The Old man did take notice and called Rocky off and told him to stop bitting people.

This morning Grace will visit a bicycle shop and get the Ol’ Salsa Cutthroat checked over and tuned up. Then it’s on to Wise River where she will spent the night camping. She sounds great and ready to keep rolling!

Let me know if you have any questions for Grace, we speak ever night. I will post the question and answer here. Email questions to: danlysk@gmail.com

Day 13 – On to Butte

Hello Grace tribe! As promised, yesterday was a challenging day. It rained all day which made the descents very cold. Grace saw her highest altitude so far, 7700 feet and really felt it. The 70-mile route to Helena greeted Grace with a closed to cars washed out road and she had her first crash of the tour. She is fine, no damage to the bike or her.

She is feeling strong today and will push on to Butte, MT

Grace is dedicating and virtually riding with the Wednesday Gravel Grind – Southern Carnage, Jory Mitchell and crew!

Day 12 – Full steam ahead!

Hello Grace tribe! We just spoke and she sounds fully recharged and ready to hit the trail. For those not familiar with Multiple Sclerosis it’s a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. The day before yesterday Grace experienced double/blurred vision and what she calls “Elvis Leg” as you can imagine with that going on pedaling can be difficult.

Today she is off to Helena, MT and it will be a 63-mile day with a TON! of climbing. She will cross the continental divide 3 times. Tour Divide course tackles 32 passes, today Grace will do 3 of them in one day. The weather report for today also calls for quite a bit of rain. It will be a challenging day for sure.

Today Grace rides in dedication to Steel City She, you Gal’s rock my world! Thank you for all your love and support!

In her own words, listen to Grace’s call in from MTBCast in Lincoln MT.

Day 11 – a day of rest

Today Grace is in Lincoln, Montana and will take a rest day. So far she has covered almost 600 miles! It’s rainy and she is feeling some of the symptoms of her MS. It will be best for her to listen to her body and do whats best to complete this thing. Hopefully, she can catch up on some social media today and reach back out to some of you 🙂

Thank you NICA team, Randolph Team for supporting Grace this past weekend! you rode over 50 miles with Grace! Knowing you were rolling with her gives Grace he extra power to roll on!

In her own words, Grace’s video check in from the trail yesterday.

Day 10 – Birds with bear whistles

Hello Everyone, Grace checked in this AM. She sounded all rested up. Last night she was able to stay in a lodge, this really helps her recharge.20180616_202113 Yesterday she took it easy, below is her Wahoo stats for the day.

Grace is always making friends, last night she meet a nice lady named Kiki from Bend Oregon who has been out for 10 weeks on a road tour. (See photos below) visiting with Kiki really revved Grace back up!

You learn a lot on an adventure like this, Grace recently learned how to tell what bears are in the area by the poop you see here and there. Black bear poop is just that, poop… Brown bear poop has bear spray and whistles in it. So, if you ever spent time in bear county whistles are used to let the bear know you are there and hopefully they stay away. She has experienced birds that “parrot” the bear whistles and has found this very entertaining on route.

Today Grace is onward to Lincoln Montana. It will be a hard day but not the hardest so far. The weather is expected to be overcast with some sprinkles which will be actually very nice.

Keep all the comments and sentiments coming, Grace reads them but has not had time to respond. She wants to say to you all how much she appreciates and loves you all.

Day 9 – Holland Lake Lodge!UPDATED!

UPDATE! 1:30 PM CT Grace just checked in. She got to “The Lodge” it ended up being 114 miles and she arrived about 12:30AM. She was super beat down and tired. The Lodge was booked and she ended up having to camp. Luckily another camper was up and stowed her food in their car so she didn’t have to “Bear Bag” That was a super big help for her as we all know she not good at throwing that anchor rock 😉

The last few miles in last night was in the dark and this is when all the animals come out.  She saw an Elk,  A sweet little fox, a ton of bunnies and of yeah swarms of mosquitoes. Apart from the mosquitoes, Grace found a lot of company and peace with the animals.

Grace slept in till 9:30AM today and didn’t wake up once last night, she was knocked out! As it’s raining today and yesterday being a humdinger, she will take it easy and roll into Seeley lake 35 miles down the trail, she still has a 12-mile climb to look forward to today.

We should have a better update tomorrow with pictures and video from the trail.

Hi Everybody, sorry for the late check-in. I was hoping to hear from Grace and have some news for you, but she is in a “dead spot” still. She made it to her destination last night “The Lodge” for a 100 plus mile day. She is rolling strong folks!

Today Grace dedicates the day to Randolph Team:  Fisher Hutchens, Jerry Weber, Justin Hanna, Mark Vickers, Lynn Burbach, Brian Matthews, Tristen Hunnewell, John and Sara Hutchens, Pierson Burbach, Christopher Laney, Elliot Matthews and David Young.

Grace believes the future of cycling is with NICA teams. Today Randolph Team has pledged to ride in solidarity with Grace. THANK YOU Randolph Team, Grace feels your love.

Day 8 – Marmots!!!

Watching the tracker yesterday from Grace’s command center and I see she arrived in Whitefish, 91 miles and 6000 feet of climbing, riding just oiled roads and hiking over snowdrifts. This is the text I receive “Hey I’m at a bar, F@!ck yeah! I dreamed of beer all day”

She sounds amazing, full of energy and she says she feels 110% and the strongest she has felt in a long time. Yesterday’s ride had some diverse weather and she was caught in a hail storm for a while. She had a special moment with some marmots when a few of them joined her for a while and ran alongside her.

“Random thoughts by Grace Ragland”
– The payout for a climb is a sweet view but the reward is really the downhill.

Today Grace dedicates the day to Patti Folgman, she is my rock, my sister from another mister and she believes in me. Patti also found the gear that is getting Grace through this. Grace loves you and you are family.

Today Grace will try for “The Lodge” which is 105 miles down the road. She might end up camping, we will let you know… stay tuned.
